Fried Endorian Tip Yip at Home

May the 4th is a date that has always made me smile, but I’m not sure I’ve done anything to celebrate it before. This year, being at home, I decided to cook to celebrate. I made the Fried Endorian Tip Yip just like they do on Batuu!

no veggies here
Fried endorian tip yip looks a lot like fried chicken tenders on top of mashed potatoes with a healthy spooning of gravy

Batuu is the planet from the Star Wars universe that Disney uses as the setting for the Galaxy’s Edge part of Universal Studios. As a Disney thing, there is now Star Wars food and even a cookbook. I found a screen shot of the tip yip recipe (actually fried chicken) and cooked it up with a few minor adjustments.

  1. The recipe calls for buttermilk, but I used yogurt instead. The odd thing about the recipe is that it does not call for a buttermilk brine/soak/marinade like you see in other recipes. The buttermilk was just part of the dredging process (you beat it together with the egg). Yogurt worked great for this and was probably a bit thicker and sticker than just buttermilk. At any rate, the result was delicious.
  2. I used the seasoning blend (salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper) on all parts of the chicken and batter. The end result was a little salty, but really good.
  3. You are also supposed to serve it with mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables…I skipped the veggies.
Salty and delicious
Looks and tastes a lot like fried chicken.

Wet ingredients:

  • 4 T yogurt
  • 2 eggs

Dry ingredients

  • 2-3 Cups flour
  • 2 t salt
  • 1 t pepper

For the chicken, I butterflied chicken breasts, pounded them to an even thinness, and then cut them into strips. I dredged in the wet, then the dry. After waiting for the oil to heat up, I had to dredge them in the dry again (re reading the original recipe, they actually dredge the chicken twice…maybe next time). I fried them up in a cast iron skillet with plenty of oil, then served them over mashed potatoes and gravy.
